Oral Health Matters!

First of, thanks for reading this post! I have one simple question for you. How often do you brush your teeth? Before you answer my question, read ahead and tell me about your opinion.

Tooth brushing is a simple act of self-care. This article is gonna tell you the importance of oral health. Some people neglect oral health care especially if they are just inside the comfort of their homes. Are you just brushing your teeth or gargling mouthwashes to impress other people? I’m sorry but I find it funny if your answer is YES.

Did you know that “bad breath” or halitosis is a sign of bacterial invasion? The more bacteria you accumulate inside your mouth, the higher the risk of infection. Aside from bad breath, food stuck on the surfaces of your teeth will become a permanent resident and will be building holes until such time that they will reach the part of your nerves inside the teeth – causing CAVITIES and TOOTHACHE.

Some cavities can be easily restored with restorative materials but painful ones are irreversible. Teeth are very important assets. We use them to talk, smile, chew foods, etc… Painful ones are subject for tooth extraction or Root Canal Therapy (RCT). Which is more expensive? Daily brushing or paying for extraction & RCT? Regrets always come at the end, right? Poor oral health could cost you your overall health in general. Bacteria could travel in different organs in your body and could cause a lot of problems.

Physical appearance could also be altered with poor oral health. Imagine a pretty/handsome person walking towards you with a black shade on his/her front teeth –what a turn off! I noticed some patients do not want to smile with their teeth exposed every time they have their picture taken. Some patients are having difficulties in chewing with a blank space on their teeth, they have to eat soft diet instead. These are just some problems that you might encounter. Comment down in the comment box if you want to know more.

Follow these guidelines before it’s too late:

  • Brush your teeth 45 minutes after meal to remove food debris
  • Use dental floss regularly to get rid of debris stuck on the proximal areas of your teeth
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue BECAUSE it accumulates plaque formation
  • Be gentle when brushing. It will just damage the outer layer of your teeth if you brush too hard
  • Make sure you brush correctly, in correct strokes –you might abrade your teeth
  • Brushing after waking up and before going to bed is recommended.
  • Make sure to have your teeth cleaned by a licensed dentist or dental hygienist every 6 months
  • Avoid putting foreign objects inside your mouth
  • Avoid touching your mouth with dirty fingernails
  • Visit the dentist if there is discomfort
